Acumen Analysis: Towards an EU Biotech Act?
Over on the Acumen blog, my colleagues and I have penned an analysis of the European Commission’s plans for “building the future with nature,” meaning its upcoming actions for boosting biotech and biomanufacturing.
In short: the European Union is looking to support biotech as a strategically-important horizontal technology, including via EU research and tech sovereignty funding programs. The Commission is preparing a study on how to streamline regulatory processes affecting biotech, which could pave the way for an EU Biotech Act during the next Commission term. Such legislation would presumably seek to reduce to legislative burden and mobilize funding for the sector.
(Pour rappel, European parliamentary elections will take place in June, to be followed by the nomination of a new Commission administration, though most likely President Ursula von der Leyen will stay on for a second term.)
