I present to you the inaugural Evopolitics podcast. This first show provides a general introduction to the relationship between Darwinian evolution and politics. Three basic topics covered:
How evolution has shaped human nature and, consequently, the basis of politics in human societies. Including the important notion of evolutionary mismatch between our ancestral environment and modern environments. Aristotle’s money quote: “Man is a political animal.”
Gene-culture coevolution: how cultural and political phenomena—including military ability, religions, and economic models—have shaped the reproductive patterns and genetic evolution of different societies. Herodotus’ money quote: “Custom is king of all.”
The Age of Biotech: how accumulating breakthroughs in evolutionary science, gene sequencing, gene editing, reproductive technologies, AI, and big data are vastly expanding our understanding of genetics and our ability to shape the evolution of plants, animals, and humans. Steve Jobs’ money quote: “The biggest innovations of the 21st century will be at the intersection of biology and technology. A new era is beginning.”
This first show is just under an hour but quite dense, which I think is important to set scene as Evopolitics will be an exotic idea for many. Follow-up shows may be lighter.
As this is my first own podcast, please do not hesitate to make suggestions to improve quality or for topics to cover.
Enjoy!
